Fidgets

Intro

Fidgets are small objects or devices that are designed to be handled and manipulated, often with the goal of providing a tactile sensation to help individuals focus, reduce anxiety, and increase calmness. They can take many forms, such as small toys, stress balls, or even simple objects like a rubber band or a pencil. Some people find that fidgeting with an object can help to distract them from their worries and provide a sense of comfort or relief.

There are different theories about how and why fidgets may be helpful for reducing anxiety. One theory is that fidgets can help to redirect or channel nervous energy in a constructive way, allowing individuals to focus on the sensation of handling the object instead of dwelling on their worries. This can help to break the cycle of negative thoughts and reduce the physiological symptoms of anxiety, such as increased heart rate and muscle tension.

Another theory is that the act of fidgeting may activate the body's "calming reflex", which is a physiological response that can help to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. This reflex is activated when a person is engaged in a repetitive and rhythmic movement, such as rocking or fidgeting, which can have a calming effect on the nervous system.

Fidgets can be helpful for people of all ages, but they may be particularly beneficial for children and individuals with attention and hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorders, as they may have a hard time sitting still and paying attention.

It's important to note that while fidgets can be helpful for some individuals, they may not be suitable for others and should be used in appropriate situations and settings. Also, it's always best to consult with a healthcare professional or a therapist before using fidgets or any other strategy to reduce anxiety as it may be a symptom of an underlying condition that needs to be treated.
